Children with Dyslexia often struggle with social-emotional and behavioral needs related to low self-esteem, low self-confidence, anxiety, poor emotional self-regulation, and a fixed mindset. They may also present with behavioral challenges such as work avoidance, high distractibility, or oppositional behaviours.
Essential to effective learning is feeling emotionally safe and accepted. I focus on building positive and trusting relationships with each student and provide instruction that is emotionally sound, scaffolded for success, and pitched at the child's current level. This builds confidence and reduces frustration and anxiety.
I establish clear expectations for learning behaviors and use teachable moments to develop a growth mindset, support emotional regulation, encourage independence and self-advocacy, and empower children to take ownership of their learning. I support each child through a positive, direct, firm, fair, consistent, supportive, and respectful approach, using collaborative and proactive problem-solving.
