At Dyslexia PowerUp, I follow a clear, step-by-step intervention cycle that has the following components:
Step 1 — Parent Questionnaire: As a parent, you will complete a detailed Parent Questionnaire that provides in-depth and pertinent information about your child's needs, history, and goals. This ensures that our initial consultation is focused, informed, and directly relevant to your child's specific situation.
Step 2 — Initial Consultation: You will have the opportunity to meet with me via Zoom for a free initial consultation. This is a great opportunity for you to share about your child, clarify your goals, ask questions, and address any concerns you may have.
Step 3 — Assessment: The assessment is the most important step in the process. It identifies your child's current functioning levels across key literacy areas including phonological awareness, phonics, sight vocabulary, reading, spelling, comprehension, handwriting, and writing. The assessments used and the time required will vary based on your child's profile, the information provided in the Parent Questionnaire, and the conversation during the initial consultation. The results provide the pre-data needed to identify your child's specific learning needs, determine the target areas for intervention, and guide the creation of an individualized literacy success plan. It may also be used to determine the frequency and duration of sessions that your child will require. Assessment is charged at USD 100 per session.
Step 4 — Follow-Up Consultation: Following the assessment, a follow-up consultation will be scheduled to discuss the results and recommended next steps, and help you gain a deeper understanding of your child's needs. You will receive the Parent Handbook should you decide to move forward with intervention.
Step 5 — Program Planning: Based on your child's unique profile of strengths and needs, specific skills and concepts are identified and prioritized. Intervention is delivered in 12-week cycles, each building on the previous.
Step 6 — Implementation: For Orton-Gillingham, lessons follow a structured and systematic format covering phonemic awareness, handwriting, review of previously taught concepts, visual, auditory, and blending drills, introduction of new concepts, spelling, sight words, reading, and writing. For EBLI, instruction is delivered in an integrated approach ensuring skills such as handwriting, phonemic awareness, blending, segmenting, spelling, vocabulary, high frequency words, reading, comprehension, and writing are reinforced in meaningful, connected ways. The content of each lesson is tailored to your child's specific learning needs. Sessions are charged at USD 100 per hour.
Step 7 — Progress Monitoring and Review: Progress monitoring is ongoing and provides frequent opportunities to adjust and refine instruction based on your child's response to intervention. Due to the diagnostic and prescriptive nature of the approach, immediate error correction is provided alongside extensive review, practice, and application. At the end of each 12-week cycle, an informal reassessment of targeted skills is conducted to track progress. This is followed by a progress review consultation to discuss results, next steps, and recommendations, completing the intervention cycle and leading back into program planning and implementation for the next intervention cycle.
